Sigiriya Day Tour from Colombo: What to Expect, Hour by Hour
A Sigiriya day tour from Colombo is a long day, but it is one of the most rewarding in Sri Lanka: an ancient cave temple, a palace on a rock and, if you like, wild elephants before dinner. Here is exactly how the day runs on our private tour, so you know what to expect before you book.
Is a Sigiriya day tour from Colombo worth it?
Yes, if you are short on time. Sigiriya is about 170 km from Colombo, so the day involves around seven hours of driving in total. In return you see two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in one go and you do not need to move hotels. For many travellers on a short stopover or a beach holiday in Negombo, a Sigiriya day tour is the only way to fit the Cultural Triangle in.
If you have more time, staying a night near the rock makes the experience more relaxed; see how many days in Sigiriya for ideas.
The day, hour by hour
6:30 am: hotel pickup
Your driver meets you at your hotel in Colombo, Negombo or near the airport in a private air-conditioned car or van. Bottled water is on board, and the seats are comfortable enough for a nap.
7:00 to 10:00 am: the drive north
The route follows the Central Expressway towards Kurunegala, then the A6 through coconut country and paddy fields. We stop for breakfast or a tea break on the way.
10:00 am: Dambulla Cave Temple
Five caves under an overhanging rock, filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings that are more than a thousand years old. Allow about an hour. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and shoes are left at the entrance.

11:30 am: climbing Sigiriya Rock
Thirty minutes later you are at Sigiriya. Walk through the royal water gardens, climb the spiral staircase to the frescoes, pass the Mirror Wall and the lion paws, and reach the palace ruins on the summit. Most people take 2.5 to 3 hours for the full visit. Read more in our article on climbing Sigiriya Rock.
2:30 pm: lunch
Your driver takes you to a good local restaurant nearby for rice and curry or something lighter.
3:30 pm: optional elephant safari
Head to Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park, whichever has the herds that day, for a jeep safari until the park closes. We can book a private jeep for US$60 so it is waiting at the gate.
6:00 to 10:00 pm: back to your hotel
The drive home is quieter. Expect to be back in Colombo or Negombo at around 9:30 to 10 pm.
How much does a Sigiriya day tour cost?
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Private car, 1–3 travellers | US$130 per car |

| Sigiriya ticket | About US$35 per adult |
| Dambulla Cave Temple | Separate ticket at the temple |
| Safari jeep (optional) | US$60 per jeep plus park tickets |
The tour price is per vehicle, not per person, and covers fuel, tolls, parking and your driver. Full details of the latest entrance fees are in our Sigiriya ticket price article.
What to pack
- Comfortable shoes with good grip for the 1,200 steps.
- A hat, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle.
- A scarf or sarong to cover shoulders and knees at Dambulla.
- Cash in rupees for tickets, lunch and small purchases.
- A light jacket if you add the safari: jeeps are open and evenings can be breezy.
Private tour or group tour?
Group tours are cheaper per person but follow a fixed timetable and often skip Dambulla. A private Sigiriya tour with your own driver lets you start when you want, stay longer at the frescoes, skip the safari if you are tired, or add a village lunch or a spice garden. For two or more travellers, the price difference is often small.
