The Lion Rock
A royal palace
in the sky
Sigiriya, also called the Lion Rock, rises straight out of the forest of central Sri Lanka. In the late 5th century King Kashyapa moved his capital here and built a palace on the summit, ringed by walls, moats and some of the oldest landscaped gardens in Asia.
After his reign the site became a Buddhist monastery, then slowly disappeared into the jungle until British officers recorded it in the 19th century. Today Sigiriya Rock Fortress is one of the most visited places in the country and the highlight of any trip to the Cultural Triangle.
Seeing it on a private Sigiriya tour means you can arrive at opening time, climb Sigiriya Rock before the heat builds, and add the Dambulla Cave Temple, Pidurangala or an elephant safari on the same day.

What you will see
at Sigiriya Rock
01 / At the base
Water gardens
Symmetrical pools, fountains and channels laid out 1,500 years ago. After heavy rain some of the fountains still bubble up.
02 / Among the rocks
Boulder gardens
Winding paths between giant boulders, with cave shelters once used by Buddhist monks and drip-ledged rock overhangs.
03 / Halfway up
The frescoes
Painted maidens in a sheltered pocket of the rock face, reached by a spiral staircase and still bright after centuries.
04 / Along the gallery
The Mirror Wall
A once-polished wall covered in verses scratched by visitors between the 7th and 13th centuries.
05 / The terrace
The Lion Gate
Two giant stone paws guard the final stairway. The lion’s head that gave the rock its name has long since fallen.
06 / The summit
Palace ruins
Foundations of the royal palace, a rock-cut pool and wide views over the forest to Pidurangala and the hills beyond.

Through the centuries
How the Lion Rock
came to be
King Kashyapa seized the throne in 477 AD and chose Sigiriya as an almost unassailable capital, far from the old royal city of Anuradhapura. When he was defeated in 495 AD the palace was abandoned, and the rock returned to the monks, who used its caves for centuries.

The Ancient City of Sigiriya is one of eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka, alongside nearby Dambulla and Polonnaruwa.
