UNESCO Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s World Heritage, Site by Site
Few countries this size hold so much history. Kings built great capitals at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, a palace on top of Sigiriya Rock and painted cave temples at Dambulla, while Kandy still guards the most sacred relic in the Buddhist world and Galle keeps its 17th-century ramparts by the sea. Inland, the rainforest of Sinharaja and the misty Central Highlands protect plants and animals found nowhere else.
Together these are the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka, and most travellers can see several of them in a single trip. Four sit inside the Cultural Triangle, no more than two hours apart, so it is easy to combine them on day tours from Sigiriya, Dambulla, Kandy or Colombo.
NH Lanka Holidays is a licensed, Sri Lankan-owned tour operator based in Negombo. We arrange private cars and drivers, hotel pickup and the best timing for each site, so you can explore the Sri Lanka world heritage sites at your own pace. Browse all our Sri Lanka destinations or our national parks to plan the rest of your route.

Questions
UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka – FAQs
How many UNESCO World Heritage Sites are in Sri Lanka?
There are eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka: six cultural sites (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Kandy, Galle and the Golden Temple of Dambulla) and two natural sites (Sinharaja Forest Reserve and the Central Highlands).
Do you offer UNESCO tours in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Our private UNESCO tours in Sri Lanka include day trips to Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and Kandy from Colombo, Sigiriya and Kandy, and we can plan a longer tour that covers all the cultural sites plus Galle, Sinharaja and the Central Highlands.
Which UNESCO site in Sri Lanka should I visit first?
Most travellers start with Sigiriya, the most famous of the Sri Lanka world heritage sites. It is easy to pair with the Dambulla Cave Temple, only 30 minutes away, on the same morning.
Can I see more than one UNESCO site in a day?
Yes. Sigiriya and Dambulla fit easily into one day, and Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya can be combined on a full day from Colombo or a shorter one from Sigiriya.
What is the Cultural Triangle?
The area between the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy, with Sigiriya and Dambulla in the middle. Five of the eight UNESCO sites are in or around it.
Do I need a separate ticket for each site?
Yes. Each site has its own entrance ticket for foreign visitors, except Galle Fort, which is free to walk. Prices change from time to time, so we confirm the current prices when you book.
What should I wear at the UNESCO sites in Sri Lanka?
At the temples and sacred cities, cover your shoulders and knees and remove your shoes and hat. Bring socks, as the stone gets hot by midday, and good shoes for the Sigiriya climb.
When is the best time to visit?
The Cultural Triangle can be visited all year, with the driest weather from about May to September and January to March. The Central Highlands and Sinharaja are best from January to April.
Can NH Lanka Holidays arrange a private heritage tour?
Yes. NH Lanka Holidays is a licensed, Sri Lankan-owned tour operator based in Negombo. We arrange your car, driver and hotel pickup for day tours or a longer private tour covering the UNESCO Sri Lanka sites. You can pay on the day of the tour or in full in advance, and cancellation is free until 24 hours before pickup.
