How Far Is It from Colombo and Negombo?
Colombo sits in the middle of the west coast, so the south coast is quick to reach on the Southern Expressway, while the Cultural Triangle and the national parks need an early start.

For trips of more than four hours each way, such as Ella, we recommend adding a night so you can enjoy the journey rather than spend the day in the car.

Questions
Day Trips from Colombo – FAQs
What are the best day trips from Colombo?
The most popular day trips from Colombo are Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, Galle and Bentota. For wildlife, choose an Udawalawe or Yala safari, or whale watching in Mirissa between November and April. Short on time? A Colombo city tour or a Negombo lagoon tour fits into half a day.
Do you offer day trips from Negombo?
Yes. Every trip on this page can start from your hotel in Negombo. Negombo is closer than Colombo to Sigiriya, Wilpattu and Kalpitiya, and around 30–45 minutes further from Galle and the south coast, so we simply adjust the start time. Popular day trips from Negombo include Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, Galle and the Negombo lagoon tour.
Can I do a day trip from Colombo to Sigiriya?
Yes. A Sigiriya day trip from Colombo takes around 13 hours, with 3.5 to 4 hours of driving each way. We leave early so you can climb Lion Rock before the midday heat and visit Dambulla Cave Temple on the way back.
Is a day trip from Colombo to Kandy worth it?
Absolutely. Kandy is about 3 to 3.5 hours away, which leaves time for the Temple of the Tooth, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya and a walk around Kandy Lake before you return to Colombo in the evening.
How long is a day trip from Colombo to Galle?
Thanks to the Southern Expressway, Galle is only 1.5 to 2 hours from Colombo. A Galle day trip usually takes around 10 hours, including time in Galle Fort, the lighthouse and a stop at Unawatuna or Bentota.
Can I visit Ella or Yala on a day trip from Colombo?
Yala is possible as a long day of around 15 hours with an afternoon safari. Ella is 6 to 7 hours away each way, so we recommend a two-day trip or combining it with Kandy and the scenic train.

Yes. We meet you at the Port of Colombo and plan the day around your ship’s schedule, with a safe buffer to get you back on board on time. Colombo city tours, Galle and Bentota are popular shore excursions.
Can I take a day tour from Colombo airport during a layover?
Yes. If you have six hours or more, we can pick you up at Bandaranaike International Airport for a Negombo lagoon tour or a Colombo city tour and drop you back for your flight.
