Wild Sri Lanka
A Local Guide to Sri Lanka’s National Parks
For an island you can cross in a day, Sri Lanka packs in an astonishing range of wild places. Dry-zone jungles in the south and north-west hide leopards and sloth bears, ancient reservoirs in the Cultural Triangle draw huge elephant herds, wetlands on the coast fill with migrant birds, and up in the hills Horton Plains rises above the clouds.
This guide to the national parks in Sri Lanka covers the 11 parks we visit most, what each one is best for and the right months to go. When you are ready to book, see our private safari tours in Sri Lanka, or browse our Sri Lanka destinations to plan the rest of your route.

Add a National Park to Your Route
Most parks sit close to places you will already be visiting, so one night nearby is usually all it takes. To see two or three parks in one trip, look at our Sri Lanka safari packages.
01
The south coast
Pair Udawalawe with Yala and Bundala, staying near Tissamaharama. It fits neatly between the hill country and the beaches of Mirissa and Galle.
02
The Cultural Triangle
An afternoon safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla is the perfect end to a day at Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa. Wasgamuwa suits travellers who want a quieter park.
03
The north-west
Wilpattu is the closest big park to Negombo and Colombo, and combines well with Anuradhapura or the beaches of Kalpitiya.
04
The hills & the east
Walk Horton Plains from Nuwara Eliya or Ella, visit Kumana from Arugam Bay, and snorkel Pigeon Island from Trincomalee.

Questions
National Parks in Sri Lanka – FAQs
How many national parks are there in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka has more than 20 national parks, managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, as well as forest reserves such as Sinharaja. This guide covers the 11 that are easiest to visit and most rewarding for travellers.
Which is the best national park in Sri Lanka?
It depends on what you want to see. Yala is the most famous for leopards, Wilpattu is larger and quieter, Udawalawe is the most reliable for elephants all year, and Minneriya is famous for “The Gathering” of elephants from July to October.
Which national park is best for seeing leopards?
Yala and Wilpattu. Yala’s main block has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, while Wilpattu has fewer jeeps and a more relaxed feel. A full-day safari in the dry months gives you the best chance, but no one can promise a sighting.
Where can I see wild elephants in Sri Lanka?
Udawalawe is the most reliable park all year. From July to October, Minneriya and Kaudulla see large herds gather around their reservoirs, and at Gal Oya you may even see elephants swimming during a boat safari.
When is the best time to visit national parks in Sri Lanka?
There is a good park somewhere every month. Yala and Wilpattu are best from February to July, Minneriya from July to October, Bundala from September to March, Horton Plains from January to March, and Udawalawe is good all year.
Do I need a jeep to visit Horton Plains?
No. Horton Plains is explored on foot. We drive you to the park entrance, and the loop walk to World’s End and Baker’s Falls takes around three hours. Start early, as mist often rolls in by late morning.
Is Sinharaja Forest a national park?
No. Sinharaja is a forest reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site rather than a national park. It is Sri Lanka’s best rainforest for birdwatching and guided walks, and we can include it in a tailor-made tour.
Can you arrange park tickets, jeeps and transport?
Yes. We arrange the private jeep, park tickets and hotel pickup, or include the park in a day trip or a longer private tour. You can pay on the day of the tour or in full in advance, and cancellation is free until 24 hours before pickup.
