Wilpattu National Park
Safari Guide
Quiet leopard and sloth bear safaris among the natural lakes of Sri Lanka’s largest national park, the closest big park to Negombo and the airport.

About the park
Land of lakes
in the north-west
Wilpattu National Park is Sri Lanka’s largest national park, spread across the dry north-west between Puttalam and Anuradhapura. Its name means “land of lakes”, after the natural, sand-rimmed lakes called villus that are scattered through the forest.
Wilpattu is one of the best places in the country to see leopards and sloth bears, yet it receives far fewer visitors than Yala, so a Wilpattu National Park safari feels calm and unhurried. Elephants, spotted deer, crocodiles and a wide variety of birds share the park, and it is only about 3.5 hours from Negombo and the airport. Book a Wilpattu safari: US$60 per jeep for a half day, or US$120 for a full day with a meal and refreshments.

Inside the park
How Wilpattu
is laid out
Wilpattu covers more than 1,300 square kilometres of dry forest, open plains and lakes. Most safaris start from the main entrance at Hunuwilagama, and the sandy tracks are slow going, so the further you want to explore, the more time you need.
The villus
Dozens of shallow, natural lakes ringed with white sand. Animals come to drink here, so most sightings happen around the water.
The forest tracks
Narrow sandy roads wind through dense dry-zone forest between the lakes. Leopards often rest or walk along these tracks.
The coastline
The western edge of the park reaches the sea near Kudiramalai Point, a remote headland that few visitors ever see.
Animals to look for
Leopards, bears
and still waters
Wilpattu leopards
Leopards are often seen on the sandy tracks or near the villus, usually with no other jeeps around.
Sloth bears
Wilpattu is one of the best parks in Sri Lanka for these shy bears, especially in the dry months.
Lake life
Spotted deer, water buffalo, crocodiles, painted storks and eagles gather around the lakes.

Travel tips
Tips for a better
Wilpattu safari
Give it time
Wilpattu rewards patience. A full day, or two half-day sessions, gives you the best chance of leopards.
Go in the dry months
February to October is the main season, when animals stay close to the lakes.
Pack light
Neutral clothes, a hat, sunscreen, binoculars and plenty of water. The sandy tracks can be dusty.
Wildlife first
Stay in the jeep, keep voices low and never feed animals. Quiet jeeps see the most.
FAQs
Your Wilpattu questions
When is the best time to visit Wilpattu National Park?
February to October is the main season, when the dry weather brings animals to the villus.
How long is a Wilpattu National Park safari?
A half-day Wilpattu National Park safari lasts about four to five hours, in the morning or afternoon. A full-day safari runs from about 6:00 am to 6:00 pm and lets you reach the remote lakes, where sightings are often best.
Is Wilpattu better than Yala for leopards?
Yala has more leopards, but Wilpattu has far fewer jeeps, so sightings are calmer. Many travellers prefer Wilpattu for that reason.
How far is Wilpattu from Negombo and Colombo?
About 3.5 hours by road from Negombo and the airport, and around 4 hours from Colombo, making it the closest major national park to the west coast.
Should I do a half-day or full-day safari in Wilpattu?
Wilpattu is large and the tracks are slow, so a full day gives you the best chance of reaching the remote lakes and seeing leopards.
Can I combine Wilpattu with Anuradhapura?
Yes. Anuradhapura is about an hour from the main gate, so a safari and a visit to the ancient city fit well together with one night in between.
Is a Wilpattu safari suitable for children?
Yes. A morning or afternoon safari is a comfortable length for younger children, and a full day suits older children who enjoy wildlife.
Can NH Lanka Holidays arrange a private trip to Wilpattu?
Yes. NH Lanka Holidays is a licensed, Sri Lankan-owned tour operator based in Negombo. We arrange the jeep, park tickets and hotel pickup, or include Wilpattu in a longer private tour. You can pay on the day of the tour or in full in advance, and cancellation is free until 24 hours before pickup.
