The sea fort

A colonial town
inside ocean walls

Built by the Portuguese and greatly strengthened by the Dutch in the 17th century, Galle Dutch Fort is the best-preserved European fortress in South and South-East Asia. Its thick ramparts curve around a small peninsula, protecting a living town of churches, mansions, mosques, shops and cafés where people still live and work today.

Walking the walls of Galle Fort is one of the great experiences of Sri Lanka: waves breaking against the bastions, the lighthouse glowing white against the sea and the old streets catching the late-afternoon light. It is compact, safe and easy to explore on foot.

A private Galle tour with your own car and driver lets you combine the fort with the south coast’s beaches, sea turtles and stilt fishermen in a single day, whether you start in Colombo, Negombo or a beach hotel nearby.

Through the centuries

How Galle Fort
was built

Galle was a busy trading port long before Europeans arrived. The Portuguese built the first small fort in the late 16th century, and after the Dutch captured the town in 1640 they rebuilt it with massive stone ramparts and bastions. The British took control in 1796, and the town inside the walls has changed remarkably little since.

Practical tips

The fort is small enough to walk in two to three hours. A good loop starts at the main gate, follows the ramparts past the clock tower and Flag Rock to the lighthouse, then returns through the old streets to the Old Gate.

  • Entry: walking the ramparts and streets of Galle Fort Sri Lanka is free; museums charge a small fee.
  • Best time: early morning for quiet streets, or late afternoon for the sunset from the ramparts.
  • Dress code: light clothes and a hat; cover your shoulders and knees to enter the churches, mosque and temple.
  • Shopping: look for gems, lace, spices and local art in the old streets and the restored Dutch Hospital.
  • Season: the south coast is sunniest from November to April; the fort is pleasant all year.
  • Stay the night: boutique hotels inside the walls make the fort magical after the day visitors leave.
