Kandy: Temple of the Tooth & the Cultural Capital

Kandy was the last royal capital of the Sinhalese kings and remains the cultural and spiritual heart of Sri Lanka. Set around a tranquil lake in the green hills, the city is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – the island’s most important Buddhist shrine – and hosts the spectacular Esala Perahera festival every July or August.

A visit to Kandy combines culture, nature and history: watch the evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth, stroll among giant bamboo and orchids at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, and enjoy a traditional Kandyan dance show. Kandy is also the starting point for the famous scenic train ride to Nuwara Eliya and Ella.
