Dambulla Cave Temple: The Golden Temple of Dambulla
The Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Five caves set high in a granite rock hold more than 150 Buddha statues beneath ceilings painted with vivid murals, some over 2,000 years old – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the island’s great sacred sites.
A visit to the Dambulla cave temple takes around two hours, including the climb up the rock with views across the plains to Sigiriya. Dambulla sits at the crossroads of the Cultural Triangle, so it fits easily into any itinerary on the way to Sigiriya, Kandy or Polonnaruwa.
