Sigiriya or Pidurangala? Which Rock Should You Climb
Two rocks, one kilometre apart, and every traveller asks the same question: Sigiriya or Pidurangala? The honest answer is that they offer very different experiences. Here is how they compare, and why many of our guests end up doing both.

Why choose Sigiriya
Sigiriya is the reason you came. The fifth-century fortress of King Kashyapa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with symmetrical water gardens, the painted maidens in their rock pocket, the polished Mirror Wall covered in ancient graffiti and the giant lion paws guarding the final staircase. From the summit you walk among the foundations of a palace that once sat 200 metres above the plain.

If you only have time for one, and it is your first visit to Sri Lanka, choose Sigiriya. Our Sigiriya tour page covers every part of the site.
Why choose Pidurangala
Pidurangala is the rock you climb to look at Sigiriya. The path starts at a working Buddhist temple, passes a large brick reclining Buddha and ends with a short scramble over boulders to a flat summit. From the top, Lion Rock rises out of the jungle in front of you: it is the classic photo of Sri Lanka.

It is cheaper, less crowded outside sunrise and sunset, and the best place in the area for a sunrise. Our Pidurangala sunrise hike picks you up in the dark and gets you to the summit before first light.
Can you do both in one day?
Yes, and it is our favourite plan. Climb Pidurangala for sunrise at about 5:30 am, have breakfast, then climb Sigiriya when it opens. You will be done before the midday heat and can spend the afternoon at the Dambulla Cave Temple or on an elephant safari.
To do this from Colombo, the easiest way is to stay one night near Sigiriya. Our 2-day Sigiriya and Dambulla tour is built around this route. If you only have a day, a Sigiriya day tour from Colombo covers Sigiriya and Dambulla, and Pidurangala can be added in the late afternoon if time allows.
Our verdict
- First time in Sri Lanka, one rock only: Sigiriya.
- Photographers and sunrise lovers: Pidurangala.
- Tight budget: Pidurangala, then view Sigiriya from the water gardens outside the ticketed area.
- The best of both: Pidurangala at sunrise, Sigiriya straight after.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pidurangala better than Sigiriya?
Not better, just different. Sigiriya has the palace, frescoes and gardens; Pidurangala has the best view of Sigiriya and a quieter climb. Many travellers do both.
How long does it take to climb Pidurangala?
About 30 to 45 minutes up for most people, including a short boulder scramble near the top. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours in total.
How much is the Pidurangala ticket?
Around LKR 1,000 per person, paid at the temple at the start of the trail. It is much cheaper than the Sigiriya ticket.
Can I see sunrise from Sigiriya?
Usually not. Sigiriya opens at about 7 am, after sunrise. For sunrise, climb Pidurangala.
Can I visit Sigiriya and Pidurangala on a day trip from Colombo?
It is possible but rushed. For both rocks we recommend staying one night near Sigiriya, or booking our Sigiriya day tour from Colombo and adding Pidurangala late in the day.
