Best Time to Visit Sigiriya: Best Months and Time of Day
Sigiriya can be visited all year, but the month you choose and the hour you start climbing make a real difference to heat, crowds and photos. Here is what our drivers, who visit the rock every week, recommend.
Best months to visit Sigiriya
Sigiriya lies in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, which gets most of its rain from the north-east monsoon. That makes January to April the classic best time to visit Sigiriya: clear mornings, green countryside after the rains and comfortable temperatures early in the day.
June to September is also a good choice. While the south-west coast gets the monsoon, the Cultural Triangle stays mostly dry and sunny, with a steady breeze. It is a great time to combine a Sigiriya tour with the elephant gathering at Minneriya, which peaks from about July to September.
Sigiriya weather month by month
| Months | Weather | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| January – February | Dry, fresh mornings, green landscape | Excellent, busy season |
| March – April | Hot and dry, up to about 33 degrees | Very good, start early |
| May | Hot, a few showers | Good, fewer visitors |
| June – September | Mostly dry and windy | Very good, Minneriya elephants |
| October – November | Afternoon thunderstorms | Fine for morning climbs |
| December | Rain from the north-east monsoon, clearing late in the month | Possible, keep plans flexible |
Best time of day to climb Sigiriya
The rock is exposed, and by midday the stone and the metal stairways get hot. The two best windows are:
- 7:00 to 9:00 am: cool air, soft light and short queues at the Mirror Wall and the frescoes.
- After 3:00 pm: warm golden light and fewer groups, with sunset views from the top if you climb at a steady pace.

On a Sigiriya day tour from Colombo, we normally visit Dambulla first and reach the rock in the late morning. If you prefer the coolest hours, we can reverse the order or start earlier. Just tell us when you book.
How to avoid the crowds
- Avoid weekends and Poya days (full moon holidays), when many Sri Lankan families visit.
- Be at the gate at opening time: the first hour is the quietest of the day.
- Skip the 10 am to 1 pm rush when most coach tours arrive.
- Watch the sunrise from Pidurangala and climb Sigiriya afterwards, a combination we explain in Sigiriya or Pidurangala.
What to bring for the weather
Pack a hat, sunscreen, at least one litre of water per person, light breathable clothes and comfortable shoes with grip. In the rainy months, add a light rain jacket and a plastic bag for your phone. Our cars carry chilled water, so you can refill before and after the climb.
