How Many Days in Sigiriya? 1, 2 and 3-Day Plans

By NH Lanka Holidays · Updated October 2026 · 7 min read

You can see Sigiriya Rock in a single day, but the area rewards a slower pace. How long you stay depends on what else you want to see: cave temples, elephants, ancient cities or simply a quiet sunset. Here are three tried-and-tested plans from our team.

Minimum1 day
Ideal2 days, 1 night
With Polonnaruwa3 days
BaseSigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana

The short answer

One day is enough for Sigiriya Rock and the Dambulla Cave Temple. Two days is ideal: you can add a sunrise on Pidurangala, an elephant safari and a village tour without rushing. Three days lets you add Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura and really explore the Cultural Triangle.

One day: the Sigiriya day tour

Perfect for travellers on a beach holiday in Negombo or a short stopover in Colombo. A private Sigiriya day tour from Colombo leaves at 6:30 or 7:30 am, visits the Dambulla Cave Temple, gives you three hours at Sigiriya and, if you like, an afternoon elephant safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla. You are back at your hotel at around 10 pm.

  • Good for: short trips, stopovers, travellers who do not want to change hotels.
  • Trade-off: around seven hours in the car in total.

Two days: the relaxed plan

Day 1

Drive from Colombo, Negombo or Kandy, visit Dambulla on the way, check in near Sigiriya and take an afternoon elephant safari. Dinner in the village.

Day 2

Sunrise hike on Pidurangala at about 5:30 am, breakfast, then climb Sigiriya when it opens. Afternoon village tour or spice garden, then drive on to Kandy or back to the coast.

This is the plan behind our 2-day Sigiriya and Dambulla tour. It is the one we recommend to most first-time visitors.

Where to staySigiriya village is best for early climbs; Dambulla has more mid-range hotels; Habarana is handy for safaris and Polonnaruwa. All are within 30 minutes of the rock.

Three days: the Cultural Triangle

With a third day, add the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, about an hour from Sigiriya, with its royal palace, temples and the rock-cut Buddhas of Gal Vihara. Or head north to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first capital, with its giant stupas and the sacred Bodhi tree.

Our 3-day Cultural Triangle tour covers Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa with two nights in the area.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, one day is enough to climb Sigiriya Rock and visit the Dambulla Cave Temple. Our Sigiriya day tour from Colombo does exactly this.

One or two nights is ideal. One night lets you add Pidurangala at sunrise and a safari; two nights let you add Polonnaruwa as well.

Where should I stay near Sigiriya?

Sigiriya village is best for early climbs, Dambulla has more hotel choice and Habarana is handy for safaris and Polonnaruwa.

Can I visit Sigiriya and Kandy on the same trip?

Yes. Kandy is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Sigiriya. Many travellers stay a night near Sigiriya, then drive to Kandy via Dambulla and a spice garden.
