How to Get to Sigiriya from Colombo: Car, Train or Bus
Sigiriya sits in the dry heart of Sri Lanka, about 170 km north-east of Colombo. There is no railway station at the rock and no direct bus, so how you travel shapes your whole day. Here is how each option really works, from a local team that drives the route almost every day.
The quick answer
The fastest and easiest way to get from Colombo to Sigiriya is by private car with a driver. It takes about 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on traffic and where you start, and you can stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple on the way. That is why most visitors book a Sigiriya day tour from Colombo rather than juggling trains, buses and tuk-tuks.
Public transport is possible and cheap, but it turns a day trip into a two-day trip. If you are on a tight schedule, the car wins every time.
By private car or van
From Colombo city or Negombo, the usual route heads north-east on the Central Expressway towards Kurunegala, then continues on the A6 through Dambulla to Inamaluwa junction, where a short road leads to Sigiriya village. Early starts make a big difference: leave at 6:30 am and you can be climbing the rock before the midday heat.
- From Colombo city: about 4 to 4.5 hours.
- From Negombo or Bandaranaike International Airport: about 3.5 to 4 hours, as you skip the city traffic.
- Cost: our private Sigiriya day tour is US$130 per car for 1 to 3 people or US$200 per van for 4 to 7, including fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver.

A private car also lets you add stops that public transport cannot: the Dambulla Cave Temple, a spice garden, a village lunch or an afternoon elephant safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park.
By train
Sigiriya has no railway station. The nearest useful stop is Habarana, on the line from Colombo Fort towards Trincomalee and Batticaloa. The journey takes around 5 to 6 hours, and from Habarana you need a tuk-tuk or taxi for the last 17 km (about 25 minutes) to Sigiriya.
The train is scenic and very cheap, but there are only a few departures a day, and seats in second and third class fill up quickly. It works well if you plan to stay overnight in Sigiriya, but it is not practical for a same-day return.
By bus
There is no direct public bus from Colombo to Sigiriya. Take an express or air-conditioned bus from Colombo to Dambulla (about 4 to 5 hours), then a local bus or tuk-tuk to Sigiriya, roughly 20 km away. Buses are frequent and cost very little, but they are crowded, luggage space is limited and the total journey usually runs to 5 or 6 hours each way.
From Colombo airport (BIA)
Landing at Bandaranaike International Airport? Sigiriya is actually closer to the airport than central Colombo is, so you can head straight to the Cultural Triangle on arrival. Many travellers do a Sigiriya day tour from Colombo or Negombo on their first or last day, or drive from the airport to Sigiriya and stay a night or two.
Car, train or bus: side by side
| Option | Time each way | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Private car or van | 3.5–4.5 hours | Day trips, families, adding Dambulla or a safari |
| Train to Habarana + tuk-tuk | 6–7 hours | Slow travel with an overnight stay |
| Bus via Dambulla | 5–6 hours | Backpackers on a tight budget |
