12 Things to Do in Sigiriya Beyond the Rock
Most visitors climb the rock and leave. That is a shame, because the countryside around Sigiriya is full of temples, lakes, villages and wild elephants. Here are twelve things to do in Sigiriya, from the essentials to the hidden corners our drivers love.
1. Climb Sigiriya Rock
The obvious first stop: the fifth-century palace, the frescoes, the Mirror Wall and the lion paws. Allow around three hours and start early. Our article on climbing Sigiriya Rock covers the route step by step, and the Sigiriya tour page explains every part of the site.
2. Walk the royal water gardens
Many people rush through the gardens to reach the stairs. Slow down: the symmetrical pools, fountains and moats are among the oldest landscaped gardens in Asia, and the view of the rock across the water is beautiful in the late afternoon.

3. Visit the Sigiriya Museum
Included in your ticket and often empty, the museum near the entrance explains how the palace was built and shows models, finds from excavations and copies of the frescoes. Visit before you climb to understand what you are looking at.
4. Watch sunrise from Pidurangala
A short, steep hike to the best view of Lion Rock, especially at sunrise. Our Pidurangala sunrise hike includes early pickup from your hotel. Not sure which rock to choose? Read Sigiriya or Pidurangala.

5. Go on an elephant safari
Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks are both within about 45 minutes of Sigiriya. In the dry season, from roughly July to October, hundreds of elephants gather around the reservoirs. A jeep safari in the afternoon is the perfect end to a Sigiriya day. See our Minneriya safari.

6. See the Dambulla Cave Temple
Just 30 minutes away, five caves full of Buddha statues and painted ceilings sit high on a rock above Dambulla town. It pairs perfectly with Sigiriya; read Sigiriya and Dambulla in one day.
7. Take a village tour
Ride a bullock cart along a dirt track, cross a lake on a traditional canoe and enjoy a home-cooked rice and curry lunch with a farming family in Hiriwadunna or a nearby village. It is relaxed, fun for children and a lovely look at rural life.

8. Explore ancient Polonnaruwa
Sri Lanka’s medieval capital is about an hour from Sigiriya, with royal palaces, temples and the famous Gal Vihara Buddha statues carved from a single rock. Cycle between the ruins or join our Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa tour.
9. Cycle around the moat and lake
Rent a bicycle in Sigiriya village and ride along the outer moat and Sigiriya Wewa, the reservoir south of the rock. Early morning brings birds, monkeys and almost no traffic.
10. Discover Ritigala forest monastery
Hidden in a strict nature reserve about an hour away, Ritigala is a ruined forest monastery with stone pathways, meditation platforms and an atmosphere few visitors experience. It is ideal for travellers who love quiet places.
11. Visit a spice garden
On the road between Dambulla and Matale, spice gardens show how cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and nutmeg grow, and many offer short Ayurvedic massages. It is an easy stop on the way to or from Kandy.
12. Stay for sunset
Sigiriya’s evenings are magical. Watch the rock glow from the water gardens, a lakeside bar or the summit of Pidurangala, then have dinner in the village. It is the best argument for staying the night; see how many days in Sigiriya.
