Cultural Tours in Sri Lanka

Few countries pack so much history into so small a space. Within a few hours’ drive of each other are royal capitals founded more than two thousand years ago, a palace on top of a 200-metre rock, cave temples filled with painted Buddhas, the temple that guards the Buddha’s tooth and a Dutch fort on the sea. Sri Lanka has eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and six of them are cultural.

Our Sri Lanka cultural tours are private trips with your own air-conditioned car or van and English-speaking driver, hotels of your choice and a pace that leaves time for village life, Kandyan dancing and temple pujas. Choose a short Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle tour, a 5 or 7 day Sri Lanka culture tour with Kandy and Galle, or our 10 day heritage tour to every UNESCO site.

Where history lives

What Is the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka?

The Cultural Triangle lies between the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa in the north and Kandy in the hills, with Sigiriya and Dambulla at its centre. Every Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle tour is built around these sites, and most travellers stay near Sigiriya and explore from there.

Sri Lanka Culture: Festivals, Food and Etiquette

A Sri Lanka culture tour is about living traditions as much as old stones. Here is what to look out for, and how to visit temples respectfully.

01

Kandy Esala Perahera

Over about ten nights in July or August, the Tooth Relic is honoured with a great procession of decorated elephants, drummers and dancers.

02

Poya days

Every full moon is a public holiday. Temples fill with worshippers in white, and alcohol is not sold that day.

03

Vesak

The May full moon marks the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing, with lanterns, light displays and free food stalls across the island.

04

Kandyan dance

Drummers, acrobatic dancers in silver and red costumes and fire walking, at evening shows in Kandy.

05

Food

Rice and curry, hoppers, kottu and fresh tropical fruit. Vegetarian food is easy to find everywhere.

06

Temple etiquette

Cover shoulders and knees, take off shoes and hats, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue for photos.

Questions

Sri Lanka Cultural Tours – FAQs

What is the best cultural tour in Sri Lanka?

For a first visit, a 5 day Sri Lanka cultural tour with Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Kandy covers the most important sites. With more time, our 10 day heritage tour visits all eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

What is the Cultural Triangle in Sri Lanka?

It is the area between Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy, with Sigiriya and Dambulla in the middle. It holds five of Sri Lanka’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

How many days do I need for a Sri Lanka cultural tour?

Three or four days covers the Cultural Triangle. Five days adds Kandy, seven days adds Galle Fort, and ten days lets you see every UNESCO site.

How much does a Sri Lanka cultural tour cost?

Every tour is private, so we send a personalised quote based on your dates, hotels, vehicle and group size. Entrance tickets to the main sites are a large part of the cost and are listed separately.

What should I wear when visiting temples in Sri Lanka?

Cover your shoulders and knees, and take off your shoes and hats at temples and sacred sites. Light, loose clothes and a scarf or sarong are ideal.

When is the Kandy Esala Perahera?

It takes place over about ten nights in July or August, ending on the full moon. Dates change every year, so tell us your travel dates and we will check them.

What is the best time for a cultural tour of Sri Lanka?

January to April is the best time overall. The Cultural Triangle is also dry from May to September, which is when the Kandy Esala Perahera takes place.

Is climbing Sigiriya difficult?

The climb has about 1,200 steps and takes two to three hours up and down, with rest stops. It suits most people with average fitness, and we start early to avoid the heat.

Can we combine a culture tour with wildlife or the beach?

Yes. Add an elephant safari at Minneriya, the tea country and the Ella train, or beach days on the south coast. Every tour is private and fully customisable.

How do we book?

Send us your dates on WhatsApp or by email. We reply with an itemised plan and quote, usually within 24 hours.
