About Minneriya National Park
An ancient tank
and its elephants
Minneriya National Park, Sri Lanka, surrounds the Minneriya tank, a vast reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century. As the dry season shrinks the water, fresh grass grows on the exposed shore and wild elephants arrive from the surrounding forests to feed, sometimes several hundred at once.
This seasonal meeting, known as The Elephant Gathering, is one of the largest gatherings of Asian elephants anywhere. A safari in Minneriya National Park is also rewarding for birds, with storks, pelicans and eagles around the water. The park sits in the Cultural Triangle, just 30 minutes from Sigiriya and Habarana, so it fits easily into a tour of the ancient cities.

Inside the park
How Minneriya
is laid out
Minneriya covers about 89 square kilometres around the tank. Jeeps enter from the main gate on the Habarana–Polonnaruwa road and follow forest tracks down to the open shoreline, where most of the wildlife watching happens.
The tank
A huge reservoir that draws elephants, water buffalo and waterbirds, especially in the dry months.
The grass shore
As the water level drops, a wide band of fresh grass appears, which is what brings the herds out.
Dry forest
Scrub and forest around the edges, home to sambar and spotted deer, monkeys and the shy leopard.
Animals to look for
Herds, birds
and forest life
Elephant herds
Family groups with calves come to the shore to graze and bathe, often close to the jeeps.
Waterbirds
Painted storks, pelicans, cormorants and fish eagles fish along the edge of the tank.
Forest wildlife
Spotted deer, macaques, purple-faced langurs and, with luck, a sloth bear or leopard.

FAQs
Your Minneriya questions
When is the best time for a Minneriya National Park safari?
The Elephant Gathering is usually best from about July to October, peaking in August and September, when the tank shrinks and herds come to graze on the shore. Elephants can be seen at other times too, but in smaller numbers.
What is The Elephant Gathering?
It is a seasonal meeting of wild elephants on the shore of the Minneriya tank. In the dry season, herds from the surrounding forests come to feed on fresh grass, and several hundred elephants can be seen together.
Which safari session is best at Minneriya?
The afternoon safari, from about 2:00 to 6:00 pm, is usually best, as the herds walk out onto the open shore later in the day. A morning safari is quieter and good for birds.
Minneriya or Kaudulla: which park is better?
Both are excellent. Elephants move between the two depending on water levels, so we check sightings before your safari and recommend the better park on the day.
How far is Minneriya from Kandy and Colombo?
About 2.5 hours from Kandy and about 3.5 hours from Colombo by road. It is only 20 to 30 minutes from Habarana and Sigiriya.
Can I combine Minneriya with Sigiriya?
Yes. Many travellers climb Sigiriya Rock in the morning and go on an afternoon safari at Minneriya the same day.
Can NH Lanka Holidays arrange a private trip to Minneriya?
Yes. NH Lanka Holidays is a licensed, Sri Lankan-owned tour operator based in Negombo. We arrange the jeep, park tickets and hotel pickup, or include Minneriya in a longer private tour. You can pay on the day of the tour or in full in advance, and cancellation is free until 24 hours before pickup.
