Overview
Our private Nuwara Eliya tea factory visit takes you into the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country for a hands-on day among the tea bushes, finishing with a Nuwara Eliya city tour. Your driver picks you up from your hotel in Kandy at about 8:00 am or in Nuwara Eliya at about 9:30 am, and you travel in your own air-conditioned car or van.
You visit Blue Field Tea Factory at Ramboda, see how fresh green leaf becomes black tea, taste the finished tea, and then step into the plantation to try tea plucking in local dress, with a basket on your back, just like the estate workers. On the way you stop at Ramboda Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka.
The price includes your private transport and entry to Blue Field Tea Factory, the tea tasting and the tea plucking experience. From Kandy: US$100 for 1 to 3 people in a car, or US$150 for 4 to 7 people in a van. From Nuwara Eliya: US$60 by car or US$80 by van.
Tea factory tour in Nuwara Eliya: the tea process
Inside the factory you follow the leaf through each stage of the tea process: withering in long troughs, rolling to release the flavour, fermentation (oxidation), drying in hot-air dryers, and sorting and grading into the different teas you see in the shop. Our tea factory tour in Sri Lanka ends with a cup of fresh Ceylon tea and time to buy tea straight from the factory.
A tea plantation tour with tea plucking
The highlight of this Nuwara Eliya tea plantation visit is walking into the tea fields. Wear the traditional dress and carry a plucking basket on your back while you learn the “two leaves and a bud” method and take your photos among the bushes. It is a fun, relaxed tea plantation tour in Sri Lanka for couples, families and children.
Nuwara Eliya city tour
After lunch we drive up to Nuwara Eliya, the colonial hill town known as “Little England”. Walk beside Gregory Lake and visit the red-brick Old Post Office, one of the town’s best-known colonial buildings. Other activities, such as a boat ride on the lake, Victoria Park or the local market, can be added on request.
Pickup from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya
