Overview
Our Sigiriya village tour shows you everyday life in the countryside around Lion Rock. We pick you up from your hotel in Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana at about 10:00 am, and spend the late morning with a farming family: by bullock cart, on foot through the paddy fields and by catamaran across the village lake.
The tour costs US$16 per person, including hotel pickup and drop-off and a home-cooked rice and curry lunch.
Village tour Sri Lanka style
Ride a slow bullock cart along a dirt track, walk along the bunds of the rice fields, and glide across the lake on a traditional catamaran made from two hollowed logs, looking out for kingfishers, water lilies and the occasional crocodile. At the family home, see how the vegetable garden, the chena field and the clay oven are used.
Sri Lanka cooking class and lunch
Help your hosts scrape coconut, grind spices on a stone and cook several curries over a wood fire. Then sit down to eat what you made: rice with four or five curries, sambol and poppadoms, served on a lotus leaf. Vegetarian and mild options are always available.
