About Gal Oya National Park

A great lake
and swimming elephants

Gal Oya National Park, Sri Lanka, surrounds the Senanayake Samudra, the largest reservoir in the country, built in the 1950s. It is the only park in Sri Lanka where the main safari is by boat, gliding between islands where elephants sometimes swim from shore to shore.

A Gal Oya National Park boat safari is slow, quiet and scenic, with forested hills on every side. Jeep safaris are possible too, through grassland and forest on the edge of the lake.

When is the best time for a Gal Oya National Park boat safari?

From about March to September, in the drier months, when elephants are most often seen on the islands and crossing the water. Early mornings are best.

Will I see elephants swimming?
